The Hyundai Elantra emerged in 1991 as a swift compact designed for efficiency. Hyundai needed a sedan that could serve as a direct competitor to both the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla, two Japanese imports that were fast becoming stars of the road. The first generation Elantra was equipped with a 1.6L inline 4-cylinder engine capable of 113 horsepower. This engine configuration for the Elantra tested at 0-60 in 9.5 seconds. In 1993, Mitsubishi developed a 1.8L inline 4-cylinder engine that saw the hp rise from 113 to 124. Transmissions were either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. Styling of the Hyundai Elantra accessories was conservative but similar to both the Civic and Corolla. The Elantra featured rounded headlights, a grille, and the Hyundai badge in the middle of the grille.

In 1995, the second generation of the Hyundai Elantra premiered. This time around, it was not only offered as a compact sedan but also a station wagon. Engine options were a 1.5L Alpha DOHC and a 1.8L Beta DOHC. The exterior parts of the Hyundai Elantra were altered as well. The grille became far less pronounced, as the hood of the vehicle now sloped down even more. Overall, the shape of the vehicle featured smoother lines for an increased aerodynamic presence. 2000 saw the arrival of the third generation Elantra. A 5-door hatchback took the place of the wagon. In 2001, front and front-side airbags became standard in all American versions of the Elantra. Air conditioning, power steering, and power locks and windows were also included into the list of standard Hyundai Elantra parts. 2004 saw further updates to the appearance and accessories of the Elantra model. Revamped headlights and taillights, new bumpers, an updated dash panel, and a new grille were some of the changes made to the car. The base trim level was the GLS with the GT trim serving as the upscale version. Leather seats, fog lights, alloy wheels, a lip spoiler, and a stiffer suspension were what differentiated the Elantra GT from the base model.

2006 saw the introduction of the fourth generation Elantra for the 2007 model year. It premiered at the New York Auto Show, and arrived at dealerships in the fall. In the U.S., the only engine offered is a 2.0L engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Trim levels for the fourth generation are the GLS and the SE. On the base GLS trim, air conditioning is not included; however, other features and Elantra parts, such as side curtain airbags, head restraints, and ABS 4-wheel disc brakes, have been added standard. There is a "Popular Equipment" package for the GLS, which includes Hyundai Elantra parts and amenities such as air conditioning, a 6-speaker stereo, satellite radio, and cruise control. The Elantra SE features these amenities standard as well as leather seats and a sunroof. The Hyundai Elantra has been on the receiving end of several awards in recent times. Consumer Reports lauded the Elantra as one of the Top Vehicles of 2008 and J.D. Power and Associates ranked the model as the number one compact car in the world in terms of initial quality based on 228 attributes such as performance, drivability, durability, rate of defects, and overall drivability.

The Elantra has really come into its own. Once relegated to back-of-the-pack status, it has morphed into an impressively styled and efficiently performing sedan. A touch of roomy luxury fills the interior of what is essentially a compact model. It has an edgy spike in performance that most don't expect, engaging yet another reason why it has become a custom favorite. Don't miss out. Letting your personality shine through in your Elantra is one of the things that makes owning one so rewarding.
